SYNESTHESIA
Each painting in this expanding series is a response to mood - mostly induced by environment, music, stress, and information overload - and records a unique emotional state at a specific point in time. Using a straight edge and brush, paint is layered, scraped, and pushed into the paper, creating fluid and rigid shapes, suggesting tension and release. This series began as an exercise to physically respond to emotions as a method for release. Having moved to Berlin from New York City, Swain was experiencing a drastic shift in environmental energy - a slowing down that collided with her internal speed. The recognition, then release of tension recorded on paper became a daily visual diary and a cathartic process for filtering emotions.
